Beech Forest Walks

Duration  Half to all day

 

Walking times & distances   Sharplin Falls Track - 2 hours and 2 km (return); Awa Awa Rata Reserve nature trail - 30 minutes & 0.5 km; Woolshed Creek & Ancient Forest - 2 hours and 4 km (return).

 

Track   The tracks are well formed bush tracks. The two longer tracks follow crystal-clear streams flowing through mountain beech forest. The nature trail is a short loop track.

 

Highlights   Mountain beech forest with rata. Rich understory of native trees and shrubs, ferns and ground layer plants including orchids. Honey dew, native birds including bellbird, fantail, tomtit, rifleman, keruru. Remnant of ancient silver beech forest.
