High Country History

Glacier-formed lake in Lake Coleridge Basin

Duration All day - alternative itineraries include Lake Coleridge Basin, Mesopotamia & Erewhon.

Walking time  A number of walks during the day from 10 to 30 minutes each.

Walking distance Approximately 3km

Track No tracks, unmarked routes beside lakes and river beds, easy walking. Locations visited include: Lake Coleridge village, power station and the lake itself (for a morning tea with a dramatic backdrop); a series of beautiful small lakes in a glaciated landscape - each distinctive in appearance and name (Georgina, Evelyn, Henrietta, Selfe, Ida, Catherine), Wilberforce River.

Highlights Rakaia River, Mt Hutt, glacial-blue lakes, Birdwatching - southern crested grebe, wrybill, black fronted tern, black billed gull.  Southern Alps mountain scenery  &  interesting  Canterbury high country history - options include Lake Coleridge basin, Mesopotamia & Erewhon
