Mt Somers Huts & Shelters There are two huts on the Walkway. The Woolshed Creek Hut sleeps 26 and the Pinnacles Hut sleeps 19. There is a day shelter (the Acland Shelter) halfway along the South Face Track near Cave Stream. There are also toilet facilities and running water at the car parks at each end of the Walkway. The car park at the Woolshed Creek end of the Walkway, called Coal Miners Flat, is also a camping and picnicing area. Hut tickets can be purchased from the Mt Somers and Staveley stores as well as the Department of Conservation. The huts are for everyone’s use providing hut tickets are used. The nominal fee for hut tickets is used to help towards the cost of maintenance of hut and track facilities. There are heating stoves in both huts. However trampers must not always expect there to be firewood provided and must be self-sufficient in terms of their food preparation. The Department of Conservation maintains the huts to a good standard and ensure that they retain a convivial atmosphere. To this end they encourage adherence to the following set of ethics and guidelines.
(in the event of a search the hut book is a vital reference for search parties) Be self sufficient - huts cannot be booked therefore you cannot guarantee that there will be room, wood or cooking utensils available. In holiday times a tent is a necessary back-up. On leaving the hut, clean floor, benches and beds. Clean pots, utensils, basins, remembering to leave them upside down to drain and avoid rusting. Empty water bucket and leave upside down. Leave windows and doors secure. |
