Marita was also a teacher who specialised in home economics, tourism and hospitality. She loves preparing and presenting food and enjoys sharing this interest with guests. Her cooking is something that all guests comment on. She has had a lifetime interest in food – some would say a passion. Marita is always happy to share recipes she has collected and trialled. A small sample of her favourite recipes is listed on a separate page on the website. Marita also has the responsibility of hosting guests. Once you return from your nature tour your wellbeing is her chief concern.

Warm hospitality and the sharing of interests and stories around the meal table and  in the field mean that many guests leave Staveley as good friends of Marita and Warren. There is now a network of these friends scattered all around the world.

Tussock & Beech Ecotours Objectives:

We aim to conduct nature tours which will allow participants to:

  • Gain an understanding of the ecological qualities of New Zealand
New Zealand has a diverse and dynamic landscape and a distinctive fauna and flora which has adapted to survive in a challenging environment
  • Increase their environmental awareness
Our nature tours venture into some special areas of wilderness where you will learn about the natural environment. But that is only half the story - we shall feel we have been successful if your resolve towards  conservation of the environment is strengthened.
  • Enjoy themselves
You are on holiday to enjoy yourselves. The nature tours attract friendly, interesting people. The landscape is inspiring, the food is delicious and the accommodation is comfortable and different.

Contribute towards conservation
Tussock & Beech Ecotours supports the work of the Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society and the Mt Somers Walkway Society.

"Men call me a fool for wasting my life in mountain solitudes, but if in doing so I have found nothing new in thought or worth giving to the world, I have at least gathered glimmerings of truth as to how nature works"

Charlie Douglas, 1890's
